Kisite Marine park Excursion Highlights

This excursion begins with a transfer from your hotel and driven south towards the Tanzanian boarder to Wasini, from here you will board a motorized boat to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park.

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is one of the best marine reserves in Kenya with a Pier that overlooks the Wasini Channel.. The park covers 28 sq km of pristine coral reefs and offers excellent diving and snorkeling .The excursion normally includes snorkeling, a walk in the coral gardens on Wasini Island and a visit to the slaves cave. You will start sailing slowly towards the Marine park as you search for dolphins, On many occasions they will curiously follow the boat and do their signature dive.

Slow moving turtles saunter over the reefs. The sandy bottom is home to many different rays and spotty moray eels look out from their daytime homes within the reefs therein while deep crevasses hide giant grouper, giant coral heads standing out from the reef wall are covered with myriads of colorful  fish. If you are an experienced snorkeler, you can be dropped off to do a drift snorkel back to the moored boat.

Wasini Island Marine Dhow Tour helped establish the protected status of the area  that is now within the boundaries of Kisite Marine Park, Kenya's best and secluded sea life park . When you arrive, you meet the experienced dive team and listen to a brief introduction about the trip and available options before setting sail in an authentic dhow. As you sail to the park site, you may spot dolphin, including the rare humpback dolphin, as well as aquatic seabirds.

Once in the Marine park, your adventure begins as you slowly go below the surface to enter an underwater realm that is filled with beautiful coral, fish, sea turtle and other inhabitants. For snorkelers, the outer reef of a rock gives you the chance to see underwater life from a unique vantage point of gazing down into the water to locate and observe the animals.

After a morning of diving and snorkeling, you will head over to the Wasini Island Restaurant where lunch will be served.

The Wasini mangrove and Coral Garden conservation project was set up and funded by the Biodiversity Conservation Program, a joint venture between the Kenyan government and the European Commission, as part of an income generating eco-tourism project to help preserve the giant coral rocks on the island and the mangrove forest while providing a livelihood for the village community

For years, the fossil coral gardens had been a tourist attraction with local and foreign visitors intrigued by the mere presence of the giant rocks. However, there was no organized guide for visitors to the site, or pathways to get around the gardens. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) came up with the idea of constructing a board walk around the  site and it was finally constructed by KWS staff and villagers, with technical help from an experienced construction engineer and financial support from the governments of the Netherlands and Germany.

The 70-member Wasini Women Group is directly responsible for its operation and management, collecting visitors’ fees, and providing guiding services. The proceeds are allocated to several village welfare projects.

You may also choose to rejuvenate with a nap or just relax on the beach front and watch the ocean waves splashing against the rocky corals. After a short reflective siesta, board your boat for the sail back to the mainland jetty at Shimoni

once the you will visit the shimoni slaves cave where you will get to learn a little history of the slave holding port,' for east Africa's coastal slave trade which reached from South Africa to the Middle East. These slave holding pens were located in the natural cave systems that exist in Shimoni.
